It was my first day as a New York based Anchor and Correspondent for CNN en Español. CNNE is revamping it's programming, look, graphics and logo, and expanding the NY bureau is part of the revamp. It is also adding to its talent roster.

I must admit walking into the Time Warner Center this morning was a bit overwhleming. At Mega TV, I basically worked on my own. I was the assignment desk, producer, booker and reporter and besides my right hand man, my cameraman, Eric and another Techinical Director, we were Mega TV. Here, it is obvious that you are part of something bigger. There are hundreds of people, producers, studios, edit rooms etc, that work for all NY based CNN programs. One of the first people I ran into in the elevator was Eliot Spitzer, former NY Governor (remember him?) and now anchor of Parker Spitzer on CNN. Definitely a huge difference from my little basement office at Mega TV.

However, the excitement of being there, knowing that I am now part of one of the most prestigious news networks in the world, trumpted any nervousness or anxiousness that I was feeling. Beyond that, the CNN En Espanol team is still pretty small. We have a senior planning producer and another reporter who has been working as their only correpondent for 2 years, Adriana Hauser. I met both of them today and I am truly looking forward to joining their team!!! My cameraman, Eric is also making the move with me.. so now we are 4... a number I am more used to.

And, some other familiar faces will be joining me as well. Two of my former Mega TV colleagues, Fernando Del Rincon and Camilo Egana, have already made to move to CNN and I cannot wait to once again be on air with them.

I'm not quite sure what exactly I'll be doing on a day to day basis. That is what this week is all about, and I anticipate making a trip to Atlanta next week to meet with the rest of the team and management.

There are a lot of mixed feelings as I leave Mega - they gave me great experience, and I will miss them. But moving to CNN is such a great opportunity, a chance of a lifetime. Wish me luck, and I'll keep you all posted as things happen... and when you can catch my debut! Stay tuned!

See more on

This is by far the biggest event I have ever covered and on my way, I was so nervous that we had to stop a few times to make sure the butterflies in my stomach had settled. The significance of what was about to happen was not lost on my small crew and I just wanted to make sure that I did it justice.

Now, as I sit and look back at this experience, I can truly say that it has been one of the most significant in my short journalistic career. Not because of the reports I filed for my newscasts the next day, but because of the people that I met, the stories that I heard and the up close and personal look at the real consequences of this country's lack of a just immigration law.

I met students fighting for the right to go to college, who know that otherwise their lives and their potential will fall short of what they are capable. I spoke to families fighting to stay together, the fear of deportation hovering over their heads like a dark cloud... jobs, homes and dreams lost. I couldn't help but cry listening to one woman who lost her daughter in Afghanistan, fighting this country's wars abroad, her body so mangled that the Armed Forces couldn't even let the family see the corpse. But now her life is falling apart. Her husband faces deportation even as they still struggle with the sadness and depression of losing a child. There were union bosses asking for livable wages for their laborers, as well as religious and community leaders calling for compassion from our politicians.

And at the moment, I realized why it is that I decided to do what I do. Yes, I got the "big" interviews as we call them in the business- the politicians, Senator Bob Menendez and Congressman Luis Gutierrez, Civil Rights leader Jesse Jackson, and even a few big name celebrities who all decided to show their support for this cause. But more importantly, I was able to give a voice to the people themselves, the masses who came in buses, trains and a few who even walked across state lines to say "we are here, we work hard, so what are you going to do with us?" And their stories and struggles have stayed with me ever since. There was an overwhelming sense of hope and dignity that transcended mere politics- pretty powerful stuff for a reporter!

However, since that march, the issue of immigration reform has once again come to the forefront, but this time in a much less hopeful manner. Most recently, my network, and specifically, our late news program Mega News Nocturno, has been following closely the recent passing of Arizona's SB-1070 and the marches and boycotts currently being organized in response. SB1070 is a racially charged law that allows police officers to ask for documentation of any person they "reasonably suspect" is in the country illegally. And while much of the English speaking media has focused on the mechanics of how people are migrating, whether its legal or illegal, I think it's important for media outlets like mine to once again, just as what happened in DC, focus on the human aspect of this debate. How are these laws, or lack thereof, affecting families, veterans, workers, and citizens? Very often the politicians and pundits forget that we are in fact talking about human beings and their hopes and dreams for better lives , just like any one of us. As an immigrant, first generation American myself, I feel it is my duty to make sure we remind them.

See more on

So much so that the NY Metro Area was pretty much shut down.

For local news media this was a very busy day. All the major news organizations had their army covering the weather in various parts of the city and suburbs. I on the other hand, was able to cover it from my backyard.

As you may already know, our NY bureau doesn't have a live satellite truck yet, so we got creative and used Skype, a few lights, and a computer to get the news out to our audience in. I just love how technology is allowing smaller outfits like mine do much more than what we ever thought possible. Not bad, eh?

See more on

As I mentioned before, I worked the green room during the concerts, doing interviews and recording promos and personal messages to Polito from the celebrities.

What I did not expect, and what I jumped into, fingers crossed, eyes closed, was the opportunity to conduct an in depth interview with Latin music's top artist, Juanes, regarding one of the most controversial issues currently making headlines in Spanish media. For background on the controversy surrounding Juanes' planned Sept 20th Paz Sin Fronteras(Peace Without Borders)concert in Cuba , see here for different perspectives. Suffice to say an interview with Juanes was "THE MUST GET INTERVIEW" of the moment.

So what happened? Well, Juanes was in the green room, ready to record the requisite material, and as I waitied for my turn to ask him a few questions, I was warned NOT to bring up his Cuba concert. If I did, he would walk out on Polito's event.

Finally, my turn came up and there I was facing a huge dilemma. I started asking him about his feelings for Polito, his decision to be a part of this concert, his incessant use of twitter, all the while debating what to do in my head. Would I heed the warning, would I really be the reporter, standing in front of Juanes, mic in hand, who let him walk away after a few trivial questions? Or should I ask about Cuba and run the risk of ruining Polito's concert?

But, as both of us relaxed, after about the third question, he just did not strike me as the type of person who would cancel such an important appearance because of a simple inquiry. Plus, in life I learned that the worst anyone can ever tell you is "no" or "no comment" and walk away.... So I had to do this! I started with, "So how are the preparations for your Cuba concert coming along?" His answer was very calm, very honest and his feet seemed planted on the ground- he didn't seem to be going anywhere! So I continued asking him questions about this Peace Without Borders concert, his opinions on the reactions, his plans to remedy his reputation among upset Cuban-Americans, and his overall philosophy of why he thought this was important.

And perhaps it was because of the tone of my questions, or maybe he was just ready to share and I caught him at the perfect time, but something very surreal happened. His answers became increasingly heartfelt and genuine. About mid way through the interview, we both noticed that the entire green room, full of dozens of artists and handlers had gotten absolutely silent- everyone paying attention to what we all realized was an important moment happening right then and there. The air became electrified and tense...and when it was all over and Juanes finally did walk away, I let out the biggest sigh of relief I think I ever have after an interview... I literally felt exhausted!

But at the same time, I felt very proud to have had the courage to ask the tough questions, even after I was told by someone in Juanes' entourage not to. The idea that I would have caused Juanes to not participate in the NYC concert scared me to death, but when we spoke, I felt that he wanted to open up. I also think he felt comfortable with the situation, speaking in NY rather than Miami, to someone who isn't Cuban-American and may not have the bias of other journalists. And he was of course a complete professional about it, despite how personal this issue was to him.

After the interview and his performance, I ran up to tell him how nervous I was during the interview, and he responded that he too was nervous, and that he hoped I wouldn't get flak for talking to him. He was more concerned about negatively affecting my career than anything. But those worries were unfounded, as the Mega TV family loved the interview, and I made the rounds on most of the shows discussing the experience. This 20 minute clip created lots of late nights of work, but it was all worth it. In the end, success comes to you once you learn to get out of your own way!

Here is the interview in two parts, which was broadcast on Maria Elvira Live on Mega TV.

See more on

They spanned two days with the top names in Latin pop, rock, salsa, merengue and bachata performing for a sold out crowd.

I worked the green room those two nights, interviewing artists as they prepared for their sets, and getting them to do "saludos" for Polito and for Mega TV.

Some spectacular moments happened during those two nights which I'll dedtail in another entry, including a game-changing interview with JUANES! But for now, I wanted to share with you some of the clips from the evening, they were a lot of fun, and totally provided me with my fill of stars for a lifetime. These clips were on the lamusica.com website, but they "mysteriously" disappeared, hence why I need to post them here. This is a bit of skunkworks on the html stuff, so please bare with me. It was hilarious the way my friends and family campaigned urging their friends and families to vote for me despite some serious competition. I was up against some very well known (and probably favored) journalists. I actually won the contest, and along with a really cool music journalist from Texas named Paul Saucido, was named Guanabee's Hottest Latino Journalist 2009. I'm still waiting for my trophie ;-), but in any case, I love the picture with the princess crown.

Later that month, the wonderful people at tikitikiblog.com asked me to guest write a piece on interviewing Latino celebrities. I was honored to do so. Their site is really great, and speaks to a lot of issues I myself can relate to.

I wrote about what I've experienced with celebrities like Aventura, Gael Garcia Bernal and Sofia Vergara. They even featured one of my videos on their site.

I love working with other Latino sites and blogs. There are some really good ones out there in alternative media. I especially like crossing over into "Latinos in English" sites because I don't get to do so on Mega TV, which is all in Spanish.

I think the future of Latino media will be somewhere in the middle, where websites, blogs, and television converge. Right now they are merging on social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter. The Latino community is taking advantage of this medium very well.

I've already interviewed people I've met via twitter, like Cristina Mella, who presented her Judge Sonia Sotomayor inspired product line of apparel and things like buttons and coffee mugs.

These are exciting times for reporters and journalists who take full advantage of the multi-media strategy. The internet, social networking, and easy distribution channels allow people like me to interact and coordinate with a whole new host of individuals. Look out web-world - I'm coming out!
See more on

I had taken time off to attend this convention, and was in the middle of a workshop series when I was called the next day (Friday). Mega TV wanted me to comment on the people’s reaction to the news.

Normally, that’s exactly the kind of story I love to do, go out into the streets, get people’s reactions, put together the story. It’s great. Except there was one problem. I cover New York City. In New York, I’ve got a camera man, I know all the best places to get comments from street corners, I can even find an impersonator or two, and of course, easy access to Harlem where there was already a crowd gathered. Instead I was thousands of miles away, in Puerto Rico, where I am for all intents and purposes, a foreigner. Not to mention I was there for a convention as a participant, and wasn't anticipating going into "reporter" mode till I got back. I might as well have been on Mars, it seemed so random...

But these are times when you have to get creative. So I put my iPhone into overdrive researching any connection between MJ and Puerto Rico, and started to literally ask for reactions from anyone at arms distance, the taxi driver on the way to Mega’s studio in San Juan, the people in the lobby, even the people who worked in the Mega TV office (who I was also meeting for the first time).

In the end, I felt that I was able to add some interesting color to the story, from this island away from home. Should I consider this my first foreign assignment? (Just FYI, there were also some technical issues with the live link, so please bear with the clip...;-) )

RIP Michael. You will be missed. I know I have a red zipper jacket I wore as a little girl somewhere hidden in my mother's closet. I think I'll try to dig it out....

See more on

This is after all, a people's parade.

Now, some may think that covering parades isn't "real" news, and I have noticed some reporters hauling themselves up and down the avenue as if they didn't want to be there, but when its about showcasing the best about mi gente (meaning Latinos of all cultures), it's news to me.

I run up and down the street dragging my poor cameraman all over the place to get a great shot, interview great people, and show the city (and the rest of the world) one of the best summer events in NYC.

Here are some pictures from the parade. Normally I'd post video, but I think this captures a bit more.

See more on

This weekend I covered the New Jersey Cuban Parade, and was able to interview such local legends as Radio DJ Polito Vega (He's Puerto Rican, but was honored at the parade), Cuban Singer Albita, and Salsa legends La Sonora Matancera.

It so happens that the parade literally is up the street from my home, so I was able to make a family afternoon of it (even including my two loves in a b-roll shot). I was able to connect with some of my colleagues from other networks who also came as guests of the parade, and take some great pictures (if you haven't seen them, follow me on twitter!). Parade season has officially begun in the metro area, and I love covering them, talking with the people and seeing the best of Latin culture and music. It may be local news, but it's as international as it gets!

See more on

Here's the piece I did for Mega News:

While covering the event, I met the guys from ModelWorks® , who were marketing their "Smash me Bernie" dolls as potential gift ideas for your favorite recessionista. We had a great conversation (I even made their website!), and they offered to make a My-Mini-Me® doll of...me! They took a picture, and just yesterday, I got the doll. Check this out!

Now, I did have mixed reactions to whether the doll is the best interpretation of me - kind of like when you get those cartoon drawings of yourself done in Times Square. But it is pretty cool. What do you think?
See more on

New York is in "celebrity season" with new movies, albums, etc being released and marketed, which means there are lots of events and interviews for me to provide for Mega TV's various shows. In addition to "farandula," I also try my best to keep our Mega TV programs abreast of the major news happening in the Northeast, from swine flu to the recent university shootings, to the war's effect on families in our area. I consider myself a reporter first, but I do find it fun to sit and talk with famous people every once in awhile. I also understand that famous names often attract viewers and readers, especially online, so I try my best to help the channel get eyeballs and exposure.

When I am about to cover an event, or interview a celebrity, I treat it the same as if I were reporting on a major city announcement or investigating a story. I do my research ahead of the event, and take special care to try and ask questions with some substance, and not just the typical "What are you wearing" and "How does it feel.." type questions that they've probably heard a thousands of times.

This usually results in a lot more interview time than what is often allocated to someone of my current status in the Spanish media world. I can usually get pretty good engagement from my interview subjects, even while their PR agents are buzzing around trying to get them to the more "major" outlets. My subjects appreciate that I've put effort into their interview, and usually provide me some great sound bytes for my pieces.

So imagine my surprise when quotes from two events I recently covered - an interview with Sofia Vergara, and my recent covering of the red carpet event for People en Espanol, found their way onto the pages of some more established media websites.

I recently found this article in Latina Magazine mentioning Sofia Vergara's new role in Broadway's musical Chicago. In it they give my interview some credit for the major quote in the article.

“I’ve sung in my house,” she told Mega TV, “but I had never stood on a stage.” Vergara, who only had two weeks to rehearse for the show, has a deep bellowing voice that catches audiences by surprise. Best part: She’s turned the cellblock warden into a Latina by peppering her lines with some Spanish phrases. “They said, Do it however you want—being Latina, being a young woman, sexy—we won’t change you,'” she has said.

I'm very grateful that they gave Mega TV the credit for the quotation.

From another perspective, last week, I covered a red carpet event for People en Espanol. I was able to get some pretty good sound bytes from the celebrities attending, mostly because I researched their latest projects (and in some cases, latest gossip) and created index cards with individualized questions for each attendee. It took me a quite a bit of time to put all this together (being a staff of only 1) but it was worth it, because I got great stuff which I included in my piece.

I then saw that some of the quoted answers showed up in print in a recent Associated Press article, which is circulated to hundreds of other websites and newspapers, as is the nature of their distribution. I remembered there was an AP person next to me with a tape recorder, so I figured that was where the quotes came from. To be clear, there is nothing wrong with using any of the answers I solicited during the event, because events like these are basically press conferences, where anything being said by those interviewed in public can be used by all media attending. But I'm pretty confident that the quotations referenced in the article were provided from my questions because they were pretty unique vs. what was being given to the other people on the carpet line. Check out the article here, and then my piece on the event below.

I guess I should be flattered that my work is helping other media with their articles. That the information one gets makes its way to other outlets is usually a good thing for a reporter, even if it's "just" entertainment stuff. I hope it proves that I am taking what I do seriously, and not just celebrity chasing or trying to get camera time. So, to Latina Magazine and the Associated Press - Thank you and...you're welcome?

See more on

There is a good population of Latinos on Campus as well as in Middletown CT, and informing them of the details around this incident may have helped capture the suspect, or keep them safe.

With that in mind, I'm giving you an update on this story since my broadcast - according to the University, they are re-opening parts of campus slowly, and holding a vigil for Johanna. Also, Below are updated photos of Stephen Morgan. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Middletown Police Department at (860 344-3200).

UPDATE 10:30PM : It appears Stephen Morgan has turned himself in to authorities in Connecticut. I also learned that Johanna was in fact Latina, with Mexican parentage. Regardless of her ethnicity, more must be done to stop violence against women.

See more on

She is amazingly down to earth and I found myself laughing with her throughout the interview. It's funny how she seems almost surprised that she is in such a major role in a huge broadway musical like Chicago. Sofia Vergara, singing in English on Broadway, shows how Latin artists continue to make inroads in American theater. Not so funny is how, as thin as she is (though very "proporcionada") she seemed nervous about looking fat on TV. I know the feeling...

See more on

This was the first time I've been asked to give an update on that show and I was delighted to give it a try. The show, with a new host and format, is beginning to integrate more "sensational" news items along with their daily diet of celebrity gossip. It's a much different format than Mega TV (I did a package for them as well) in that it was more a question/answer session than a straight presentation. I was nervous because I've never worked with the new host, or the co-hosts for that matter, and they've never worked with me. I think I did ok for my first time. As with everything, practice makes perfect...what do you think?

See more on

The movie made it's way through the festival circuit if you missed its release. Afterwards we played phone tag for months in trying to get all the old Barrio Boyz together in one place for the interview. We finally met up at their music directors home in Upstate, NY and I had a great time talking to them, listening to them reminisce about old times and talk about what they were planning to do in the future.

This is the era of boy band comebacks, I recently went to a NKOTB concert and those guys were better than ever. I was invited to drinks with many of my former colleagues from Telemundo's Noticiero 47, the Local spanish language news program where I started my career. It was great seeing many of the people I worked with, have some drinks, and dance to great music.

Unfortunately, we came together to mark the end of an era at Telemundo 47. They recently announced the elimination of the Morning, Midday and Weekend newscasts, and layoffs for everyone who supported those programs.

The reason of course is the economy. Telemundo, like most networks these days, is struggling to compete in this ever competitive marketplace for ratings and ad dollars vs it's peers and the new media model where people get their news from a lot of sources than just their TVs.

On top of that, Telemundo is affected by the unique position it has been in these last 8 years. NBC Universal, a subsidiary of General Electric bought Telemundo in 2001 for almost 2 billion dollars. These days, GE is struggling as a company, and the NBC divisions are all trying to deal with the changing media landscape. My husband, who follows business closely, once told me that Telemundo will always get the short end of any restructuring stick. If NBC is struggling to find revenue for their news programs on NBC, MSNBC, CNBC, it's various websites, as well as it's smaller cable affiliates, will they have any appetite left to spend money and energy trying to save Telemundo, which caters to what they consider the relatively small Spanish-speaking audience? In 2006 The National Association of Hispanic Broadcasters wrote a letter to NBC protesting the cuts announced then in Puerto Rico and elsewhere, and in 2001, the NAHB protested the original proposed purchase of Telemundo by NBC, expressing doubt of NBC's true commitment to the Hispanic Community.

Whatever the business or political reasons, it is always sad to see friends and former colleagues lose jobs. As someone still starting in this business, it does look scary to see the bigger news networks cutting while we are still trying to build.

But like true Latinos, we take these changes in stride. Despite such devastating news, my friends at Telemundo kept their heads up, supported each other, and ended the evening dancing and having a few drinks. Rather than wallow in the events of what happened, they celebrated what they had experienced together, and hoped for a better future.

I am sure I will stay close to all the people who worked with me at Telemundo 47. They gave me my start, showed me the ropes, and allowed me to imagine myself as a reporter. The bright spot of it all is that in this business, people tend to work with each other again and again. I look forward to that possibility.
See more on

It was great seeing models behind the scenes (and without makeup -even more fun!) Custo is an eccentric Spanish designer who is getting lots of attention lately. Fashion week in New York is crazy, lots of people running around, people with headsets acting very important, but you have no idea who they are talking to. There are are so many people back stage that it took me 10 takes to do my intro because people were bumping me or walking into the shot. But we got a great interview (see below) and had a surprise guest.. Current Playboy cover girl Aubrey O'Day. I've been working on many projects since then, but unfortunately I've been having issues getting the videos to post to share with you guys. I recently got back a bunch of finished files and I will be posting them soon.

In general it's been a pretty intense couple of weeks, if not months. The economy has been brutal to everyone, and media companies are not immune. Take a look at this recent announcement by NBC Universal.

Mega TV is growing however, and that's great news! We recently added new stations in California and Puerto Rico, and that means more demand for the New York perspective. I've been working on about 1-3 packages a week, along with my day to day responsibilities of booking guests for the various shows and managing the office here.

With that said, I know I owe you guys some stories, and they will be posted soon! I've got some great stuff on Holloween, the Election, and other stuff that I'm dying to post.
See more on

While there, I decided to go into a senior's center where it looked like a group of people were gathered. Most of the elders were Puerto Rican, many of them residents in the US mainland for decades. Most are staunch Democrats, and practically all had voted for Hillary during the primary season. This is no surprise since Hillary is New York’s Senator, and most of the residents here have lived in New York for a long time.

The reactions were mixed. I asked them a few questions: Now that Hillary has asked her supporters to vote for Obama, how will you vote come November? Where you disappointed she was not selected for Vice President? Some told me they were true to their party, and would vote for the Democratic nominee. Others said that they were convinced by Hillary to fully support Obama and would work heart and soul on Barack’s campaign, and still others were unconvinced, and while none said they’d vote for McCain (perhaps the Democratic party's biggest fear), one told me she even contemplated “throwing away her vote” on election day.

From the reactions of that small test population however, it seems that Hillary did her job in getting most of those who supported her, including Latinos, to join ranks with the Obama camp to help elect the first African American president in US History.

Perhaps it’s their age, or perhaps it’s the fact that Puerto Ricans have been in the city for a few more generations than other Latino groups in New York or that immigrants from Puerto Rico enjoy instant citizenship status, but it was incredible how absolutely informed and passionate this group of seniors are about US politics. They knew the candidates, what was at stake, and perhaps most of all, they are all regular and frequent voters. This is a stark difference from other neighborhoods I’ve covered, like Washington Heights, where it is hard to find people who’d admit (on camera at least) their political views or people who are passionate about US politics vs. politics from their home country. I was able to get terrific and intelligent interviews for my story. It is always a toss up trying to get reactions from people in the streets. Many times they just don’t know or don’t care about the subject matter. Others will tell me something brilliant but as soon as the camera is turned on, they either run away or forget everything they just said. So it was great being able to get exactly what I needed from such an unlikely source- our senior citizens… Abuela apparently has more to say than we give her credit for ☺
See more on

The headquarters of Mega are in Miami FL, like Univision and Telemundo. Miami is the center of Spanish language programming in the US.

I of course live in the capital of the world New York City, and just a few blocks from me are the studios of ABC, FOX and NBC. The Spanish language affiliates of Univision and Telemundo are actually off in New Jersey. So my little operation is nestled right in the middle of the “big boys.” This poses both benefits and a few challenges for me. Being close to the other studios makes it easier for guests to stop by my studio for interviews and quick live satellite connections with our Miami shows. However, sometimes I’m expected to compete with some of these networks who seem to have unlimited resources and can be everywhere at once. I have a crew of well, one.

But, Mega TV is growing fast. They just expanded to Puerto Rico to local station WSJU Channel 30 and will soon be adding additional cities. I just finished recording “saludos” to Puerto Ricans on the island from their families in New York. Those saludos will be running during the inaugural week of the new channel.

I’m excited about the prospect of Mega TV expanding the New York operation. Right now, most people who see Mega TV in the New York area do so via satellite on channel 405, using the Direct TV Mas package. What’s interesting about New York is that most buildings don’t allow satellite dishes on the sides of buildings, and the cable companies have monopolies on various individual neighborhoods. This is a big difference than Miami, where most viewers can see my work on their local channel 22. There, the channel is 3rd in ratings and the 11 o’clock news is quickly gaining on the better-known competitors in that time slot. My mother in law who lives in Homestead, FL, can see my segments whenever they are on, and has the shows set up on DVR.

We have a ways to go here in New York, but if we make it, there is a large population of Latinos looking for more choices for their news and programming. The English language networks have taken advantage of the programming vacuum by offering their own Latino programming and they are finding success. But watch out world, when Mega TV goes local in NY, you’ll be seeing a bit more of me. Then maybe I can prove to my parents that I’m actually on TV…;-)
See more on

I was coming up the exit stairway on the 53rd street and 7th ave subway station on my way to work when in a moment, my eyes began to sting, my throat began to burn and then constrict. I looked around and saw other people having the same reaction to what we quickly realized was some type of toxic fume coming out of the subway. At one point I could no longer keep my eyes open, the fumes stung so badly. I held my breath and with the other passengers, quickly scurried up the remaining stairs toward the street for some fresh air.

When I reached the surface, there were fire trucks and police cars everywhere. Firefighters in gas masks were running into the station. There was lots of confusion and a bit of panic as people’s minds raced- Subway fire? Toxic Spill? Terrorist Attack? Thoughts of the Japanese subway sarin attack of 1995 and September 11th were on everyone’s minds. The first thing people did as they exited the subway and were able to breath again, was pull out cellphones to call loved ones. I did the same.

The police on site asked me to stay and wait for medics who were on their way to check those who experienced the fumes. Soon I was waiting my turn near the back of an ambulance for them to check my pressure and breathing. Then an interesting thing happened. I found myself surrounded by news cameras with eager local reporters asking for details of what happened. I recognized a few, from NY local channels NBC 4 and Fox 5, ABC 7. I knew what they were looking for because I’d be looking for it too- a quick, clear description from a witness about what he/she saw, felt and thought. So I helped them out and told them what I experienced.

Over my mini shock and the weird feeling of being the subject of news as opposed to reporting it, I called my own cameraman to the scene to get B-roll (background video) for use in our news program later that day. I walked around and interviewed the fire chief, people on the scene, and other witnesses.

That afternoon, I sat in front of our studio camera connected live to the Miami broadcast. Interestingly enough, I found it difficult to flip from reporting the event to describing how I experienced it. There is a level of disconnect that a reporter has that allows him/her to narrate the events of the day, and add emphasis and importance in a way that will connect with viewers. However, when one experiences something first hand, it changes the narration because different things become emphasized. At one point I had to take a 5 second breather as I searched for the right word to use during the live Q&A.

Everything is ok of course. It turns out the fumes were caused by a burnt escalator motor, and no one was injured. Later that day, I received emails from friends who saw me being interviewed on the different channels. So ironically, today I went from subway commuter, to witness, to reporter, all before breakfast….
See more on

The information on the card includes a phone number and a personal, confidential ID number created by the holder. When the potential partner dials the phone number and enters the ID, a recording tells them the last time the holder was tested and the results of this test. The program does not guarantee that the cardholder is disease free, but its goal is to encourage regular testing and promote sexual responsibility.

At first glance, one may be dubious. I imagine the conversations may get awkward. “Hey babe, how about my place…here’s my STD Free Card, go check it out…” Or worse, in the heat of passion, one of the paramours pulls away saying, “Wait…I haven’t checked your STD Card yet…” But in reality, if one is considering a new sexual partner, the “have you been tested” conversation should be had, and the card could actually make the introduction and verification of that conversation a lot less awkward than say “Are you sure you’re tested? Are you lying to me?” Talk about a buzz killer!

The founder of the program, Eli Dancy, is a great guy and told me that he has over 15,000 cardholders participating in his program globally. Great start! But I wondered what it would take for that number to grow dramatically. The card is of course voluntary, and is only of real value to those who want to prove they are disease free. I suspect if the test comes back positive, the person would stop providing the card. Hopefully, they would also stop their risky behavior.

But, under what circumstances would it become compulsory to have a card? At first I couldn’t see one, but Eli did tell me that he is working with the adult film industry to provide cards to their “talent.” This struck me as the perfect place to begin. Whatever your opinion of those in the sex industry, they know that healthy talent is vital, and being in this type of program would make perfect sense. But, how about dating/escort services? Or singles clubs? Requiring these cards may help these establishments protect their patrons while maintaining their privacy. Hmm... All in all, I think the card is an interesting idea.

As I pondered all the possible uses for this card, the time came to send my story and video to the folks in Miami. The "safe sex license" of course, inspired great conversation within my team. One of the editors pointed out that the card has a magnetic strip on the back. I hadn’t noticed this and since it is a call-in service, the feature seems unnecessary, which lead him to ask, “So, where are you supposed to swipe that thing?”
See more on

She is Miss Venezuela and the winner of the 2008 Miss Universe Pageant. As luck would have it, the Miss Universe office is right up the block from where I work, so Dayana was able to stop by to chat and do a live interview via satellite with our Miami people.

Dayana is beautiful as well as articulate, and as the new Miss Universe, has a pretty crazy 12 months ahead of her. But just in case you think it's all work, check out the list of perks she enjoys during her year reign .

Jealous yet?? Well, you would think that someone who's about to receive a year's supply of everything she could possibly desire, and who can call herself the most beautiful woman in THE UNIVERSE might be a bit full of herself, or as we like to say in Spanish, "un poquito come mier..." At least that's what I expected as I made myself up in the bathroom minutes before she arrived, making sure every strand of hair was in place and the mascara was flawless. One of my work colleagues actually ran out to change her clothes and shoes. Heck, if you are going to be in the same room as Ms. Universe, you can't look like the cleaning lady.

But to my surprise, Dayana was nothing like my preconceived notions. She was in fact extremely warm and approachable, and I found myself forgetting that she is even a celebrity. There are few people in the spotlight that can maintain this type of personality, and it was refreshing to see that, so far, Dayana has been able to "keep it real." Perhaps, it shouldn't have surprised me. Another Miss Universe I've met and interviewed, Denise Quinones (2001), is also very down to earth. So, if I ever run into a third, I guess I won't let the crown intimidate me. It seems that these women are just nice people who really do want world peace.

As if to make that point clear, when I asked Dayana what she wanted the public to know about her, she replied "I want them to know that we are regular people. That we eat, sleep, get sick, and go to the bathroom just like everyone else." She then told me that she had pink eye, hence her indoor sunglasses.

So there you have it! Cracker-jack reporting at it's best. I have uncovered a long standing secret behind one of the most celebrated pageants on earth- even the winners sometimes need a bathroom break.

;-)
See more on

Alex Jimenez

I had the somber responsibility on July 11th of covering a story close to my family. 25 year old Alex Jimenez was a soldier serving in Iraq last year when his brigade was ambushed by insurgents. Alex was kidnapped along with two other soldiers and even though the body of one was found a few days after the attack, Alex remained MIA until Army reps delivered the news that his body had been found and identified earlier in the week. Alex's family lived next door to my aunt and uncle for many years so they are good friends, and would always be present at their family gatherings.

I became aware that there was an update on Alex, ironically enough, through Facebook as one of my cousins had updated her status reflecting the bad news. This was before any of the other news agencies or wires had received an alert as to what was happening. I called my family members and soon found out the sad details. Some of my cousins and my aunt and uncle were consoling Alex's mom, Maria Duran, during this tragic period.

As a reporter, it is my job to cover this event, but as someone with a personal connection to the story, I felt that I had the duty to make sure that the coverage was tasteful, that Alex was reflected as the hero he truly is, and that the focus of the story was not simply of a mother crying for her son, but of the sacrifices our families make when our children fight for our country.

There were some frustrating moments while I was waiting at the news conference for Maria Duran to make her statement. I saw some reporters attempting to sneak "exclusives" with the mother by trying to intercept her on her way in. I also saw some jostling and pushing among the camera crews for the best angle, etc. While I did have direct access to Mrs. Duran, I chose not to exploit my connections for an exclusive, and to allow a mother to, albeit with every major news network parked outside her door, grieve for her son.

I also found out later that Mrs. Duran arrived late to the press conference, not because she was running errands or at church, but because her employer did not let her take the day off on the day she was to go before dozens of cameras to speak to the country about her loss. She works as a home attendant and while it is extremely important that someone cover her clients, I couldn't understand how her employer did not make the extra effort in this situation. This only added to the tragedy of the moment and also reflects the true reality of the difficulties many Latino families face in adjusting to life after they've lost loved ones in these wars.

My deepest condolences go out to the family of Alex Jimenez, and my utmost gratitude and appreciation for the service he gave to this country. It is easy to forget as we enjoy the freedoms we have at home, that they come from young men and women like Alex, willing to give their lives for an ideal of freedom and democracy.
See more on

On July 1st, one of those was personal security.

Piedad Cordoba, a leftist Senator of the Colombian government, was being interviewed in my studio. She's pretty controversial, but a good "get" for Maria Elvira Live, our political talk show on Mega TV. I often set these interviews up via fiber optic connection with the studios in Miami, as New York is a major hub for many international politicos.

Well, today the morning show DJs of El Vacilon on 97.9 FM caught wind of who was in my studio and shared it with their audience. They received a flood of calls from New Yorkers regarding the guest, and decided they wanted to include her on their show.

In true Vacilon style, they sent Papi Chulo, one of their on air personalities, across the hallway to my studio - in nothing but his underwear - to interrupt my interview to invite Ms Cordoba to their studio.

Suffice to say what happened next can only happen on La Mega!
